Hello
What is encaustic?
History of Encaustic Painting
Encaustic is an ancient artistic medium that dates back to the 4th century BCE and is one of the worlds oldest art forms This wax-based painting technique has been used by many famous artists throughout history, including the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. The earliest applications of wax paint was done by the artists in Ancient Greece, thus where the Greek word "enkaustikos" meaning "to burn in" came from. They were using the paint to adorn sculptures, murals, boats and even architecture. Greek-trained Egyptians started to use the encaustic paint in their mummification practices.
The technique involves melting and fusing pigmented beeswax with resin and applying it to a surface, such as wood, paper, or canvas. The wax is then heated to a temperature that allows it to be manipulated and sculpted, creating beautiful, unique works of art. Because of the durable material, if cared for properly, the artwork can last hundreds of years.
Many artists today are drawn to the medium because of its versatility. You can paint, print, collage and sculpt with it. It works well with mixed media, you can create your own colors, work with it as a thin transparent glaze or a bold opaque color. It truly allows an artist to explore and work hands-on with an ancient, natural material.
Due to the uniqueness of the medium, it looks much better in person. The softness and tactile quality it has does not translate via photographs. The photographs on my site give you a good idea of the work but I guarantee they are much better in - person.
